Previously in Days of Becoming: The last few days have witnessed incredible tumult and tragedy. Charles Xavier has been killed by Jean Grey in her Phoenix manifestation before she herself died on Alcatraz at the hands of Wolverine. Rogue has disappeared from the school, sneaking out in the early hours of the morning to get "cured." Thousands of American mutants have taken the cure including — unwittingly — Magneto himself during the battle on Alcatraz. In the final moments of that battle, when the Phoenix force was destroying all in its path, Bobby broke away from his X-Men comrades to save John, carrying his unconscious body off the battle field and across San Francisco Bay.

Jubilee, out of action as a New X-men due to a broken leg, has been following the arrest of an Asian gang leader in Los Angeles, one she seems to remember from her childhood in the house of her dead parents. Scott Summers has jumped on his bike and gone to find out why his dead lover, Jean Grey, is still calling him.

Back at the School for Gifted Youngsters, Bobby finds himself full of doubts. Although he and Rogue are supposedly the number one couple of the school, he finds himself thinking constantly about John and their time together. Doug Ramsey and Jones have formed a somewhat shady underground business called Janus Dog Node, helping various organizations and individuals hide money and information on a private, secure Internet simulacrum.

After John reads a homoerotic poem in class, Bobby asks Rogue to be his official girlfriend.

Series Summary: This novel focusses mainly on the paths Iceman and Pyro take on their way to adulthood and how they discover and deal with their love for each other. It is a novel about what Joni Mitchell calls "the dream's malfunction" and how we can learn to make our own dreams when our heroes fail us. Other X characters and OC's play prominent roles and the action begins before X1, continues through the events of X2 and X3 and concludes in the aftermath of that movie.
Chapter Summary: The characters react to the shooting in Pasadena. At the mansion, they plan action; in Boston, a disillusioned Mike meets an interesting girl; at the mutant youth meeting in New York, Bobby makes a bold (or is it foolish) move. Bobby and Kitty wonder what's up with all the spandex.
