What I love about my oldest nephew (my sister's oldest kid) is that, in a family where being straightforward is not always the mode of choice, he just drops bombshells right, left and centre and lets everyone recover as they can.

He and my dad drove me and Snake home after dinner, as we had filled the trunk with reno purchases. Halfway down the Don Valley Parkway, he casually says, "E (his little brother) came out to you guys this summer, didn't he?"

"Uh, no..." we all said in unison (the dog kept sleeping).

"Oh, 'cause he came out to mom and dad last month. I just thought you probably knew..."

Of course, we all did anyway, ever since his Rainbow Bright obsession at age 5 and his childhood of birthday parties always featuring him and 12 girls. My nephew added to that, "Yeah, and the gay porn he always forgot to delete from the history."

Bombshells are good for my family.

What a good lad. My family doesn't typically say anything openly. We just gossip and assume everyone knows everything. It usually works. I never told anyone other than my parents, but everyone in my family knew years before I introduced my husband.

Fair bit of anger in that one, but a lot of kindness, too. He's the first person I've known through all the stages from infancy to adulthood.
