The Holidays
Jan. 7th, 2008 02:03 pmThe holidays began tensely and ended tensely but in between, they were most pleasant. Notes from the holidays:
Things that weren't so good:
- Got adequate sleep
- Made good food including lamb casseroles and cheesecake
- Wrote fiction
- Read books and comic books, including The Elvis Costello biography, Complicated Shadows and volumes of Jack Kirby's Third World and Mike Allred's Madman. Also, New X-Men: Childhood's End Vol. 1-3
- Saw lots of movies, notably The Dead Girl (highly recommended), Sense and Sensibility, Hellboy, Spider-Man 3, Sweeney Todd, The Golden Compass. Unfortunately, we found M. Night Shyamalamadingdong's The Village in the library and foolishly watched it. I will go on and on about how bad it is upon request.
- Edited video with my youngest nephew while his older brother was upstairs making blintzes with Snake
- Got together with family several times and was not angst-ridden about it.
- Redid two rooms with new vinyl flooring
- Bought sensible and ridiculous shoes, new blankets and a new mirror
- Downloaded the Champ's original version of "Tequila"
Things that weren't so good:
- I didn't see or speak to friends hardly at all. I was a fucking hermit.
- Snake's cholestrol numbers came back high and he's worried, though information online seems highly contradictory
- I didn't finish Chapter 18 of DOB. It was a bugger to get the first half right but I think I've managed it
- Our cat seems to have decided to die. He won't eat but the vet can't find anything wrong with him.
- The snow was awesome, this thaw sucks

Date: 2008-01-07 08:36 pm (UTC)Also, our diet is not terribly cholesteroriffic. Our research into the topic also showed that dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol are not so neatly linked. However, some foods are good for actually lowering cholesterol levels.
The cat, if he lives to see his birthday, will be 13 in March. He seems alert, still enjoys going out to the backyard, is affectionate, drinks water... he's just not interested in eating. Perplexing and saddening. I keep whispering little pep talks in his ear, reminding him why being alive is fun.

Date: 2008-01-07 09:01 pm (UTC)It really is a genetic thing with some people.
I struggle with weight (mainly on my lower half), but have never had high blood fats. I think that overall, I'd rather struggle with a extra few pounds of ass than have my dad's high cholesterol, thanks anyway.
I have a 14 year old dog that is so active that I think I must be miscounting his age, but I'm not. He's getting blind and deaf, but still manages to jump around and run to me when my car pulls into the driveway.
The only cat I ever had that ate regularly was a fat cat and we were always trying to keep her out of the food dish. I tend to think it's natural for cats of any age not to eat for a few days on occasion. Only if he seems in pain, totally inactive or doesn't eat for several days would it worry me.
The only thing I can highly recommend about "The Village" is that "Robot Chicken" (which is on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, in case you've never heard of it) made a hilarious parody of it. It might be on YouTube somewhere, a lot of stuff from Robot Chicken gets put on there.
That's the one good reason for bad movies...they make the best parody fodder ever.

Date: 2008-01-07 09:13 pm (UTC)But bitch about The Village. I try to see all his movies, just so I can bitch about them.

Date: 2008-01-08 01:41 am (UTC)I totally agree. The thaw needs to make like a tree and leave.

Oh, the poor kitty! :( *hugs*
I LOVE our thaw. I can park in my driveway now! :D (Snow and snow bound garbage cans blocked one of the 4 parking spots.)
Two months until we visit and bother you! Yeah!
