Birding Win
Nov. 18th, 2009 02:48 pmWow. I just saw a goddamn PILIATED WOODPECKER for the first time in my life. I've been checking out its handsome profile in my birding books since I was a kid, but I'd never seen one in the flesh.
I thought it was a duck as it came squawking through the sky and landed on a tree not far from me. I watched him for about five minutes, including a majestic display of slow, powerful pecking.
There was no one around to tell, so I had to explain the importance of the event to a passing squirrel who took time out from his pre-winter fattening-up to listen to the rant of this crazy birder.
