I'm sleepy this morning. Luckily the pres of our company is in Europe, so I can sleep on his office couch at lunch.

So, I'm 40 years old. Saturday was the big day, but I like to make my b'day into a festival of at least a week's duration. We had L/GHEI guests from France staying with us Thursday night and Br'er Rabbit and I toured the town with them Friday, being treated to a wonderful dim sum lunch at Rol San. New dish of note: Tofu skin stuffed with mushrooms. hao chi!

Friday night, Snake took me out to Elixir for a breathtaking Persian-themed meal. We started with Escargot in a tomato and tarragon reduction and then both had lamb dishes. Snake's was a pungent and savoury half-rack and mine was a shank in an apricot cream sauce with saffron. We polished this down with Chardonnay and finished with both desserts on the special list: a chocolate cheesecake and a homemade orange blossom ice cream. I felt pampered and loved and satisified, especially since we are usually the kings of cheap ("Appetizers? What a rip-off. No thanks, we'll just have water with the meal and ice-cream at home"). YAY!

Saturday morning started with homemade poppy-seed lemon muffins and was spent mostly lounging around. I spent two hours talking to a friend I'd lost touch with and invited her to my party which will take place next Sunday. After lunch I was given my main present, a Boss V-Wah. I played with it extensively all weekend. This present did not come as a surprise as I took the arrogant step of creating a present list this year. If anyone is feeling generous and celebratory, there are still a couple of unfilled items thereon.

I was craving a good hamburger, so the Rabbit, the Snake and I headed to the Artful Dodger for dinner and then went to see the Brazilian dance troupe, Grupo Corpo. Excellent. (Cooler link, but in Portugese is this. And here's a bit of video.)

Next Sunday, we're having an afternoon party featuring oysters and other savoury delights and then cake. Why next week? I didn't feel like cleaning the house on my birthday.

What's it like being 40? Fine so far. But, damn! I kept saying "Those dancers are so young!"

Oh! And our French guests took a CD of my recent songs with them to give a friend who has a pirate radio station in France. Cooooool.

Ring, Ring

We watched the American version of The Ring last night, having seen a pirate copy of the Japanese version a few months ago. Snake claims there is also a Korean version, but I think he's confused.

Warning: spoilers ahead.

Surprise, surprise. The American version was much more coherent, atmospheric and well-shot than the original. My favourite thing about it was the way it undercut the happy, liberal ending. Just because Samara was finally given some graveside luvin' didn't erase the evil that had been done to her. And she will demand her story be told again and again until the end of the world on pain of death! That's what I call keeping your cause top-of-mind in the media.
