I have never really liked listening to Sinéad O'Connor despite thinking she is kind of kick ass as a person (Compare her anemic soulless rendition of Nothing Compares 2 U with any live Prince version of the song). However, I just stumbled upon Throw Down Your Arms, her 2005 reggae album and while it SHOULD be the most appalling thing one could imagine, it's actually astonishingly good.

She sings with such conviction and musicality that I'm totally a convert. It doesn't hurt that Sly and Robbie's production is just right there. mmm. uh-huh.

You are right. I can't imagine Sinead singing reggae. I am trying to picture her in dreadlocks. I'll have to try and listen to it someplace.

It's a brilliant record. "Jah Nuh Dead," "Y mas Gan," and "Untold Stories" are my favourites from it.

And Throw Down Your Arms and Downpressor Man (which is a version of Sinnerman, a song Nina Simone recorded, too).

It's healing music, Tim! You need a bit of that, eh?

I love that record. I love that she's faithful to the songs without compromising her own sound. If that makes any sense. And I really, really love that she stole "Untold Stories" back from Buju Banton. I understand he's gone all spiritual now, but I can't forgive anyone who once called for all gay men to be shot in the dead, dipped in acid and set on fire.

Gee, you can't forgive that? You are hard, man!

By the way, I like "shot in the dead". That should be a song title.

Soulless? I dunno.

I think you missed the boat on what she was trying to do with that song. Perhaps the Prince is too stuck on you?

*shrugs*

Then again, I am a harpsichordist. Most people don't get what I do, so perhaps I'm too sympathetic.
