I See Dead People!
Jul. 16th, 2004 09:19 amOf course, the other way of looking at it is that I'm a total stubborn fuck. If I have a vision for a drawing, ain't no no-nothing editor gonna tell me different. No how!
One of the compromises I agreed to was to lose the image of the dead boy with hand trailing in the Nile-turned-to-blood. Like the dark punchline of that tenth plague, this last bit of imagery in my plagues spread is stark and harsh. The editor suggested I show grieving parents instead (dressed in Gap™ clothing?). So I seem to have redrawn it as a grieving mother with a dead child in her lap. I actually researched pietas for the image. I was all proud of the new drawing when I looked at it again and... there was still a dead child.
I'm a stubborn fuck.
Oh! Also! I got a chipper phone call from editor bitch on my voice mail: "Hi, I'll be in Toronto next Wednesday for the day. Let's meet!" I'm writing back to her this morning: "Oh, shucks! I'll be out of town for a couple of days." Frankly, a face to face would only be an invitation for negotiation and I'm through negotiating.
I'm in a better mood, by the way. Thanks for your words of support. I should be upstairs drawing already, so bye.

Date: 2004-07-19 09:37 am (UTC)My drawing board was initially setup in the tiny middle bedroom of the second floor but is now in Tutu's room as we are renovating the middle bedroom. Hopefully the renos will be finished by the time he gets back from Beijing.

Yes, I have way too much time on my hands tonight.*smiles*
And I say: What's wrong with an image of a dead child in a children's book? They see worse on public television these days. I'm sure your dead child image has more relavence then most images of the dead. Or, at least I hope so.

As to your last paragraph: I KNOW!

A graphic novel sounds interesting. What's the plot? What cetegory? I'm a book hound! Plus, I love supporting the writers around me.

What category is that?
