About a month ago, I realized I wasn't ready to write my new novel, which was evolving into something large and majestic in my head. I think it needs six more months of brewing and some heavy research which I have already begun.

In the meantime, I decided to write a shorter novel with a 13-year-old hero, and I suppose aimed at that age group. This is a novel I've had in mind for a few years, and I found it wasn't hard to get to the starting line on it. I finished the first chapter last week, and the second chapter yesterday.

Starting was scary, and I had to push through waves of doubt, but by the time I had gotten past a few false starts, the shape of the world, the rhythms of the language, and the unique halting bravery of the main character started to come into focus. Now, I think it's going to flow pretty well. It should end up being 50,000-60,000 words, and I should be finished by the fall.

What I'm going to do with it isn't clear. I'm planning to serialize the big novel as a podcast, but I'm not sure about this one. For now, I'll just write.

It's really good to be writing again.
