Sentiment

I have little patience for sentiment, but I try not to beat myself up when I succumb. After a few days of indecision while his body was frozen outside (though carefully wrapped), I finally had a cremation service come by and pick up Claudius.

The woman who ran the company was also a professional funeral director for people so I put my years of watching Six Feet Under to use and talked her ear off about the cat's illness and death and how empty the house seems. That's what these morticians are paid for more than anything. Like bartenders. I got closer to acting like a "proper" mourner around her than I have at any time so far. Snake has been upbraided at work for not acting sad enough. Fuck you, bozos.

I got a free book from the funeral lady about grieving for a pet. It will be lol-worthy, I assume.

Anyway, we would have buried him in his beloved garden if the ground weren't frozen. Now we'll be able to bury his ashes (no urn, straight into the earth) in the spring. Here he is sleeping under the red currant bushes last summer:

Snake's grandmother had ribizli in her garden and it was such a fond memory for him that we have filled ours with it. We make jams and also eat the tart fruit fresh covered in sugar in the summer. We also make a mean ribizli ice cream.

Thanks for the kind words.
