I don't want to blog about death anymore. Well, a little. The cat played a dirty trick yesterday by pretending he was going to live. Despite yesterday's improved energy and breathing, he still refused to eat and we almost got clawed to death trying to force a bit of food down his thrown. He's lying beside me, quite weak, as I work in the basement today. Poor kitty.

Okay, two big comics enthusiasms of late for those who are interested in these things. I've finally gotten around to reading my way through Mike Allred's magnificent Madman now that it's been reissued in three lovely trades (plus another of the spin-off series, The Atomics). He has just resumed the story over at Image Comics who are also responsible for the trades. Not only is he a brilliant, campy artist, but he can manage the difficult act of being comedically retro-campy and profound at the same time. Highly recommended.

I have been reading comics in a serious way for thirty years now. I have gotten to the point where I can decide if I like the art in a book (which is make or break no matter how good the writing) in about three seconds. The "flip test" is what Chris at the Beguiling calls it. Unusually, it took me a while to decide that the art in Wasteland was actually excellent and an equal to the fine writing. It is a post-apocolyptic political SF story in a desertified America of the future. Two trade volumes out so far and I'm hooked.
