Thursday
My plane was scheduled to arrive at 2:15 but was an hour late. I was exhausted and looking forward to being picked up by my brother in law at the airport. I was fantasizing about the two hours of rest I could have before his book launch that evening. So, he came to the airport for 2:15, found I was late and had to leave.

Instead of taking normal transit into Penn, my mom guilted me into paying for a "fast" shuttle bus that they promised would take 30 minutes. They lied. I had to transfer at Grand Central and wait forever for the next bus. These are the vehicles I used bewteen my house and my sister's house: bus-subway-bus-plane-bus-bus-train-taxi. 7 hours.

The dinner and reception for the book launch was great and the food, at umpteen self-serve stations, was out of this world.

Friday
We took my mom to airport and then I hung out with my sister all day. Major fun was going to Main Street in Queens where all the Orthodox Jewish shops are. We got take out glatt kosher Chinese food for the Shabbes crowd that we were expecting that night. The very successful store is run by Fujian Chinese and one Orthodox Jew who assures the kosherness of everything. As we picked up our little chopstick packs, he reminded us that we had to break them apart before sundown because it would violate the Sabbath to it at dinner.

Saturday
Into the City to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] mofic. We had a great time gabbing about writing, family, X-Men and everything else under the sun and we visited the International Center of Photography. After Mo left, I wrote for an hour in the basement of the Metro Cafe and then met my sister and we went to see The Little Dog Laughed on Broadway.

The script was great and the produciton so-so. A rising movie star is being pushed forward by an agent of steel. But, everytime he gets drunk, he calls rent boys and tarnishes his str8 reputation. This time he actually falls in love with the rent boy and the agent has to head the romance off at the pass lest he fail to acheive superstardom. It features (briefly nude) Johnny Galecki who was Darlene's boyfriend David on Roseanne.

Sunday
I went into the City alone and saw the brilliant, dark, spectacular revival of Sondheim's 1970 musical, Company. Director John Doyle used the same technique as with his produciton of Sweeney Todd last year: all the actors were musicians and formed the orchestra for the whole show, slipping seamlessly between their roles as actors and musicians. Company was even better than Todd. The dramatic, cynical, darkly funny scenes about marriage and friendship were beautifully acted and the music was fabulous. Broadway heaven even as Broadway is dying pathetically around it.

I flew home on Monday. One of the best parts of the mini-vacation is that I didn't push myself to consume more and more experience. I rested each day and wrote each day. Balance is hard for me to acheive in general and I got a taste of it this weekend.

Glad you found it. Sound likeyou had a good time, other than the hullaballoo of public transportation.

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself.

In the meantime, want to meet up tomorrow? I've been terribly busy and the Spadina station thing has been distracting, so I've not picked up the TV.
