One of the reasons I haven't been updating very much is that I've been having on-going problems since February with tennis elbow, and with a pinched nerve in my back. One of the things I'm trying Is dictation software; specifically, iListen for the Mac. Right now I'm going through the rather interesting process of training the dictation software to understand me. I do this by reading stories and texts to the computer and also by letting it analyze documents I've previously written so that it can learn my style.

Whether this ends up as more than a game, I can't say yet. But it is kind of fun. It's not just the software the needs to learn my voice, it's me who has to learn how to write speaking. Apecifically in the context of livejournal, I have worked hard to you develop a conversational style of writing. And yet as I dictate now, I find my writing incredibly stilted. Still, it's cool to be standing with my hands in my pockets writing an LJ entry.

BELOW IS THE ENTRY EXACTLY AS THE SOFTWARE TRANSCRIBED IT:

So this is how it'll work? I'm impressed. I think.

I'm guessing it's not worth the effort. Even if I take the time to train it, I'm guessing I use to large a vocabularly and too creative a style to ever make dictation easy. Unless my arm just gets worse and falls right the fuck off.

Pretty interesting. What's up wit hadding "to" at the end of sentences? Do you have any idea what you're doing that it hears as "to"?

My brother has pretty bad carpal tunnel and uses Dragon Dictate software.

Maybe it's a breath it's hearing. I was wondering that myself.

What does he dictate? Can he get creative with it and use a large vocabularly without tons of correction, etc.?

He's a novelist. But he only uses it to get a bunch of words in. He does lots of correction, editing, etc. by hand, but I guess what aggravates the CTS is the repetitive movement of typing, not the movements of editing.
