Lord! I am finished my week at the office. It's 7p.m. and I still have to do my timesheet, having finished the longest hand-off letter of my life. I'm exhausted. There is nothing on this fine blue ball that could persuade me to take on the job of Production Supervisor which is mine for the asking. Nothing.

Why do people work five days? Rebel, minions! Rebel! And, while you're at it, don't accept two-weeks as your yearly vacation time. That is not a benefit, it is proof of slavery.

I found something to make the job bearable today. I got my Mac to read me X-Men fanfic as I layed out a report. It was just slow enough for me to be able to concentrate on my work and put together the meaning of sentences that were being garbled by Mac speech. When it can't read a word, it spells it. This included a lot of Guthrie's "y'alls".

I do believe that 'work has set me free' at this point and time. Working five days a week for consecutive months is giving me time to sort myself out and be able to plan for whatever I want to do next. I know exactly when my paychecks are coming, and how much they will be. I am no longer subjected to working weekend and evening hours (unless I so choose) and not getting to see other human beings that I love because my schedule is so bizarre - having honest-to-god personal vacation time helps this as well. I can flex and re-arrange hours around MY needs. All of this has helped me finally feel ready to take care of some physical problems I've had for ages, which you are well aware of. I am pretty happy in my so-called slavery, thank you very much.

I will grant you that I do not think this particular business will last forever, but who knows. It will at least have been a year of empowerment for those of us involved.

You're right in that I am, as usual, advocating my experience as THE ULTIMATE. I'm reacting, in part, to Toutou's much more coercively demanding job which is supposed to be 40 hours but turns in 50 every week, including constant guilt trips that he is not doing enough with the implied threat that he will lose the job.

I think the latter case is more common than yours. I totally understand the stability of a good job. I have that with my three days. Of course, I'm paid sufficiently to support my modest lifestyle and we work to keep our lifestyle modest.

Also, 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year leaves no opportunity for personal growth and for new inputs into your mind and heart. This situation worsens as you age, take on more responsibilities and need more rest.

Two weeks vacation is, I repeat, criminal.

I am down to your sounds, man. Rebel rebel rebel!

But you already knew that, and I am almost entirely making this post just to demonstrate my rebuttal icon. ;)

You might have a point; Batgirl may be more fab than glam. But she can kick higher than Selina and she rides a PURPLE MOTORCYCLE!

I'm curious how it reads the word "x-men". Does it say ksmen?

No, it says "X-Men", but the emphasis is on the "Men" so it sounds funny. The word actually didn't appear in the story (it being an X-Force fic), so I coded it and tried it just for you.

I'm working at home today (Thursday) and tomorrow. I would love to get together for tea and give you your birthday present. Call me.
