I'm sleepy this morning. Luckily the pres of our company is in Europe, so I can sleep on his office couch at lunch.

So, I'm 40 years old. Saturday was the big day, but I like to make my b'day into a festival of at least a week's duration. We had L/GHEI guests from France staying with us Thursday night and Br'er Rabbit and I toured the town with them Friday, being treated to a wonderful dim sum lunch at Rol San. New dish of note: Tofu skin stuffed with mushrooms. hao chi!

Friday night, Snake took me out to Elixir for a breathtaking Persian-themed meal. We started with Escargot in a tomato and tarragon reduction and then both had lamb dishes. Snake's was a pungent and savoury half-rack and mine was a shank in an apricot cream sauce with saffron. We polished this down with Chardonnay and finished with both desserts on the special list: a chocolate cheesecake and a homemade orange blossom ice cream. I felt pampered and loved and satisified, especially since we are usually the kings of cheap ("Appetizers? What a rip-off. No thanks, we'll just have water with the meal and ice-cream at home"). YAY!

Saturday morning started with homemade poppy-seed lemon muffins and was spent mostly lounging around. I spent two hours talking to a friend I'd lost touch with and invited her to my party which will take place next Sunday. After lunch I was given my main present, a Boss V-Wah. I played with it extensively all weekend. This present did not come as a surprise as I took the arrogant step of creating a present list this year. If anyone is feeling generous and celebratory, there are still a couple of unfilled items thereon.

I was craving a good hamburger, so the Rabbit, the Snake and I headed to the Artful Dodger for dinner and then went to see the Brazilian dance troupe, Grupo Corpo. Excellent. (Cooler link, but in Portugese is this. And here's a bit of video.)

Next Sunday, we're having an afternoon party featuring oysters and other savoury delights and then cake. Why next week? I didn't feel like cleaning the house on my birthday.

What's it like being 40? Fine so far. But, damn! I kept saying "Those dancers are so young!"

Oh! And our French guests took a CD of my recent songs with them to give a friend who has a pirate radio station in France. Cooooool.

Happy Birthday!!

That dancing group looks very cool... did they do that "graphic equalizer" dance when you went to see them?

Yeah, they did. I wish I had a CD of the music because it kicked. That dance was the first, and the troupe were less a group of people than a series of brushstrokes on the canvas. In the second piece, they were fully humans and it was a hilarious piece about love and sex which featured a giant projection of a fuzzy red heart. The costumes for that one were lime green with bright red circles on the crotches, butt cheeks and, on the women, the breasts. There was a beautiful guy-guy pas de deux in that one, too.

Thanks for the b'day wishes.

I've been meaning to alert you to the upcoming Cirque du Soleil show, Varekai, in Chicago. Get tickets as soon as they come on sale. Modern circus at a whole new level. Just amazing.

Happy Birthday! Sounds like a very 40-something birthday to me. Mine still involve cheap ice cream and cheap alcohol.

On an unrelated note, I recently bought Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. I'm sure you've read it, but if not, I command you to read it Right Now.

Yuppie scum
Smug and dumb
The richer they are
The dumber they get
When they get old, they all forget

Thank you for the b'day wishes, sweetie. I'm having a party Sunday afternoon. You and Timmikins are very invited. Come to Toronto, please.

Yes, I have read and enjoyed Understanding Comics. The sequel doesn't much interest me, though, and I wish McCloud would return to making comic books. I adored Zot!

I'm going to the Toronto Comics Arts Festival (http://www.torontocomics.com) the last weekend of March, principally to meet Carla Speed McNeil and tell her how brilliant Finder (http://www.lightspeedpress.com) is. Tell [livejournal.com profile] snowmit to keep volumes 3 and 4 safe.

Hm, wish we could have come. Stupid school. Stupid Tim's work. Stupid swift passage of time.

Hope it was lovely, though. Perhaps you should post a description for the curious (i.e. me.)
