Inappropriate Pet Names

As we contemplate the name of the dog we're getting this Thursday, I find myself remembering the original cartoon series of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch which must have aired in the early 70s. I watched this show with pleasure and, I think, with recognition of its echoes of Bewitched, that queerest of 60s sitcoms which I also delighted in at that young age.

Sabrina had a cat named Salem and I duly passed that name on to the stuffed cat that slept with me. It occurs to me now that a witch naming her cat Salem is roughly equivalent to a Jew naming his dog Auschwitz.

Hmmm...very true. But, if I am remembering right, the cat's name was Salem because he was a witch who was a cat as punishment for something he did in Salem...but then again, I could be remembering incorrectly.
