Little Creatures All Come Out
Sep. 5th, 2003 10:55 amI've been drawing kewt li'l kids for the book. They represent the four children, a parable in the Passover hagaddah about how each type of child needs to hear the story in a different way. There's the wise child, the rebellious child, the simple child and the child who can't even ask a question.
I'm having fun making small connections between the disparate group in recognition of the fact that they are a family, no matter how different they are. I'm especially taken with my 10 year old rebel boy whom I've given a Mohawk and an anarchy "A" (I was going to give him a "Che" head on his t-shirt, but the return of this symbol as new bullshit fashion statement pisses me off and will be over by the new year). As these characters come to life under my pencil and I refine the details of the pose, of the clothing, of the facial expression, I feel like I understand more and more of their inner life and, by the end, I'm extremely fond of them.
He has a love/hate relationship with the family cat whom he is holding up by the tail much to the cat's consternation. What amuses me even more is his innocent-faced 6 year old brother who is holding up his teddy bear by the foot in unconscious imitation of his bad big brother. Sow the seeds of rebellion, baby!
I might post these pics after I ink them. Should I?
