Okay, I'm going on LJ strike (which starts in 20 minutes).
I will blog later about advertising and my life, but that's not the major issue.
I keep hearing that "LJ is a business and so it has a right to censor, charge, limit, exclude, etc." I heard this last summer during the great strikethrough debacle, I hear it now. Well, LJ knows at some level it's wrong because it agreed to an advisory council, because it tried to find ways to be less draconian in its censorship... for a while.
LJ knows what it has done... it has fostered community, it has increased dialogue in the world in a small but not insignificant way. It has created safety, support and nurturing for individuals and for ideas great and small. It has been a bridge.
These accomplishments cannot be stifled under the pillow of commerce without at least a few qualms in the heart of anyone who has himself benefited from this kind of communication. LJ needs to reminded (over and over again) that in creating this hive of communities, it has created moral responsibilities for itself.
It has to remember that by creating a space for THE WORD, it has built itself a structure (and a success) on the collective intelligence of the word slingers. Yeah, I know, some are pretty stupid, but they're not as stupid as the ones sitting on their cell phones or in front of their TVs who never string letters together to form words.
I get the argument now: LJ = content. The fact that they'll save on bandwidth does not weaken the fact that advertisers want to be here (as do paying members like me) because the content makes it a worthwhile place to hang.
And, also, as
quirkstreet says, I feel like sticking it to the man.
So... Strike! Strike! If I was feeling real stroppy, I'd delete comments left in the 24 hours, but that wouldn't be me.
See you on the other side.
