Humbug to Biofuel!
Jul. 15th, 2008 11:02 amAnother bit of proof that growing fields of bio-fuel corn is a bad idea. A new study out of University of Wisconsin Madison debunks the idea that biofuel produces fewer greenhouse gases.
In order to cash in on demands for this new wonder fuel, large tracts of forest are being cleared in developing nations, releasing all the carbon stored by the organic matter. The study shows that offsetting this sudden increase in greenhouse gas through use of the "greener" fuel might take hundreds or even thousands of years.
My conclusion: No matter how much we want it, having a society built around personal transport as opposed to mass transit is not going to be sustainable.
Attention Southern Ontario: the auto industry is not coming back; find something else for the newly unemployed to do rather than trying to subsidize the auto industry back to life. Even creating an electric car industry will only be a temporary measure. There is no room for more cars in the GTA (or around any metropolitan area) and there is no place in landfill for their carcasses.
