The architect has completed his plans for our second floor renovation so we are preparing to get quotes from contractors for the work.

Prepartory to those meetings, we just spent three hours wandering around Home Depot getting an idea what things cost. Our guidelines are clear in our heads: we're planning to stay in this house until we're old men so we want things that will last. BUT, we are not going to spend money on crap that is expensive because it's show-offy.

Still, it's a bloody slipperly slope, I'll tell you! We look at laminate floors and they're clearly not as attractive as real hardwood. But then you look over at the premium hardwood floors and this one with varied shades of reddish browns just delights the eye -- and jacks up the budget.

Out of curiosity, you move from the inexpensive laminate countertops to marble, quartz or Corian and say, "maybe we can afford the lower end of those." But then all the really nice patterns are in the mid to high end.

So we're dreaming of all the beautiful stuff now and we will continue to until we get the actual quotes on labour and material -- at which point we'll realize we can afford plywood floors and countertops made of old orange crates.
