Uptown Down
Dec. 8th, 2003 03:20 pmThey closed my favourite movie theatre, the Uptown, just after the film festival in September. There was talk of trying to save it, but within 6 weeks, a sign for Priestly Demolition appeared on the marquee. This of course, conjured up images of men in black cassocks swinging censers against the side of the 83 year old building while they chanted in Latin.
We can see the theatre from our 10th floor offices. By this morning, the west wall had been removed. When we came out of a meeting at 11:30, we found that one of the remaining walls had fallen on the neighbouring English school and we learned subsequently that one person was killed.
Looking out the window now, a piece of rainbow has appeared in the sky, directly over the site, pointing to it.
The Priestly sign has been removed.
