On Saturday, we paid off our mortgage. It took 11 years of fairly aggressive payments. We walked into the bank and wrote them a cheque for the balance and now the house is ours.

This is pretty damn exciting not only because it means we're debt-free and don't have to make payments every month, but because our home is so damn important to us. We don't really ever intend to move. Ever. We're homebodies. Homebase kind of guys. Mothership lurkers.

On the other hand, it's strangely anti-climactic. It's numbers on paper and an intellectual illusion. As I said to [livejournal.com profile] briseur on the phone, it's not like there was some banker named Neal who had been sitting on our living room couch all the these years. We didn't get to say, "Neal, pack up your sorry banker ass and hit the road!"

But we took time to celebrate. We went to the St. Lawrence Market (which is pretentious and yuppy and overpriced) and bought elk and wild boar sausages from a guy who raises elk (though not boar... If you raise boar are they still "wild boar"?) and washed them down with fine beer from Guelph, Ontario.

I don't know how to end this post. Points in the future that you dreamed of for years turn out to just be moving motes in the river. Go know.

Thank you, G. May you grace us with your presence at future celebrations in our home.

BTW, you should download BSG se03 eps 3, 4 because I have the rest for you. (The season opener that we saw with you is actually counted as eps 1 and 2). It starts up again next Sunday.

Congrats! Now that I'm paying off my student loans, I'm looking forward to the day when I pay the final amount. Sure, it's symbolic and abstract (as much as any "money" is), but I'll be celebrating too!

Wow...I guess I'm impressed because I'm nearly 50 and have never had a mortgage...I was born under a wandering star...doomed to be a gypsy, I suppose.

Congratulations! :-)

Congratulations, my friend. May you have a long life, filled with love, in your home. Like the old saying says "A man's home, IS his castle". May the battlements of your castle be built with love, generosity and kindness - and may your home always be a welcoming place for family, friends and loved ones.

I look forward to one day seeing your home, and to perhaps one day joining in one of the various celebrations you have there.

*big bear hugs*

Scott

Congratulations. I'm truly envious. It will be a long time before I'm debt-free.

Congrats. We've had ours for 8 years (a 30), refinanced twice, to a 20, then a 15 year. So we've been chewing on our from the other end, so to speak.

And the fact is, any debt weighs you down and reduces your options. So, yay.

Play your violin, gypsy, play! If you don't need the encumbrance of a house, don't get one. I don't crave a car but it is vital for others.

And hopefully a once in a lifetime milestone. A guy I met at a party who is all into money and stuff said we should sell it, buy a more expensive one and pay that off. Repeat until retirement and then downsize. But I can't be so cavalier about my dwelling. It is my precious nest and I want to feather it more and more cozily.

Nice icon drawing, Allene!

To be truthful, he was a wild bore.

*yuck yuck yuck*

Really? There are no little organic operations and craft beers and other stuff like that in Miz?

You are a year or two younger, honey.

(Have I ever called you "honey" before? I end up calling everyone honey and sweetie eventually).

That's a lie.

Thank you.

So one day you'll go out to the yard to pay the mortgage and it won't be there?

Thanks

Thanks!! ^_^

And yeah, I know what you mean! I've known people who basically make a living out of buying houses, living in them while renovating, then sell them once they're perfect and move on to the next project. I get so attached to places I live (unless they're crappy basement apartments on Gordon Head Road, in which case, SMELL YA LATER) I think it'd be hard to let go again and again!
