My security card (that gets me into our office suite) has had a crack for a couple of weeks. Yesterday, I finally took the paperwork for the new card down to the security desk in the lobby. I was told to come back today to collect my new card.

This morning, I forgot all about it until I was in the elevator, pulling away from the lobby where my new card was waiting. I said to myself, "Just go hang up your coat and turn on your computer and then head down". I pushed my cracked card into the reader slot and, as I pulled it out, it broke in half, disabling the door for everyone for half an hour.

Not so bad? Just ironic timing from the universe? Okay, it's worse. Yesterday, the card got temporarily stuck in the reader and cracked almost all the way through. Relieved I had pulled it free without jamming the device, I stopped using it for the rest of the day. I would like to say that the urge to try it out this morning was just forgetfulness. But, no! I actually wanted to see if I could get it to work one last time even in its dilapidated state. Call it curiosity -- call it sheer stupidity.

At least I didn't try a colleague's suggestion of sticking some gum on the end of a coffee stir-stick and fishing for it.
