1. cardigan welsh corgis:
   Smart, loyal, majestic but comical, curious, inventive, tenacious, friendly, loud, strong. A wonderful breed. We heard about a monestary in France where Cardigans act as leaders for tours of the trails on the grounds.
   
2. david bowie:
   His voice as a singer, writer and soundsmith resonates loudly through everything I do.
   
   The fact that he rediscovered his power in the 90s and 00s after a fallow decade fills me with hope.
   
3. funk:
   It's all about the one. It is mother's milk.
   
4. jack kirby:
   I'm just making my way through a collection of Thor comics from 1966 and 1967. The stories are astonishingly similar and prosaic and yet every panel is a revelation. His bottomless imagination and daring layouts are endless source of inspiration and make me dream of grand things.
   
   He is the anti-Seth.
   
5. maureen f. mchugh:
   An unheralded genius of SF and a great humanist. She has only four novels in about 12 years but they're all fine:
   
   China Mountain Zhang, Half the Day Is Night, Mission Child and Necropolis.
   
   Her plots are very oddly structured as her main concern is the voyage of her characters. Some find this fascinating, some feel it to be a letdown.
   
6. nausicaä:
   Hayao Miyazaki's epic manga is one of the most important works of SF and fantasy I have ever read. Like his movies, he deals in conflicting interests rather than good and evil and at the centre is one strong and clear-headed girl who must save the world. Nausicaä was re-released in an elegant right-to-left seven volume edition last year by Viz. I only wish it had been hard cover.
   
   It is an epic tale of human survival in the face of environmental catastrophe and post-apocolyptic societal meltdown.
   
   I have yet to see Miyazaki's movie truncation of the epic.
   
7. peter greenaway:
   Is he still on my list? I must go and revisit his movies. I am especially moved by Drowning by Numbers. He is the James Cameron of art movies. He could beat Lars Von Trier to a bloody pulp any day. And I wish he would.
8. sadness:
   Sadness is an emotion I value as it often gets crowded out by anxiety. When I can relax enough to truly feel sad, I also feel blessed.
   
9. stephen sondheim:
   An intellectual passion. Broadway, my dears, is dead dead dead. Sondheim was the last breath and even he realized he should go to smaller venues to make his dreams happen.
   
   His best show (as a complete work of theatre) is Pacific Overtures. I can sing about 60% of his oeuvre by heart. Maybe more.
   
   As a theatre lyricist he is both the only true successor of W. S. Gilbert and his superior.
   
10. tikun olam:
    Hebrew for "fixing the world" or improving it. I want as much of my life as possible to be dedicated to actions that make the world a better place. For instance, as a graphic designer, I choose not to tell lies for a living by working in advertizing or making smiling brochures for new "mortgage instruments". My human power will not be used (when possible) to bring down the world.

i love what you said about Sondheim. I was singing through Anyone Can Whistle with my friend toodie last night. He is a fucking genius. I need to get a recording of Pacific Overtures.

I recommend the Original B'way Cast Recording. There is a later more complete one by some British Opera Company but the feel is way better in the original. I have the script, too, which is brilliant. I saw the revival last December on B'way which made me all kinds of happy.

It's amazing to see how well Sondheim's lyrics land. The audience hears all the jokes and the nuances.
