I had an amazing time on Saturday at the first Annual Toronto Comic Arts Festival which was basically a comic book convention minus the guys in Klingon uniforms. All the artists in attendance were independent comic book creators whose relationship to the corporate comics world is equivalent to the indie filmmakers' to Hollywood.

Unfortunately, my only local comic book friend ([livejournal.com profile] redrunner and [livejournal.com profile] snowmit live in Montreal until next year) couldn't come, so I went alone. My main reason for attending was to meet Carla Speed McNeil, creator of Finder who is one of my absolute heroes. She is a creator as visionary as Ursula K. Leguin and a jaw-dropping artist to boot. I spent nearly an hour talking with her at her table, buying some material that I didn't already have and choosing an original page of Finder to buy. Here, Speed (as she calls herself - yes, it's her real middle name) poses with the page I bought.

Another highlight came in the discovery a young New York artist named Becky Cloonan (here's a link from her $2 photocopied comic, but I haven't checked it yet). From Tommy X-Ray and the Sympathy Fucks:

That night, I was so super-saturated by graphic magic that I dreamed vividly of shapes, colours, topographies and architectures. I wish I had two or three lifetimes; I would be a comic book creator in one of them!

(Of course, y'never know: I could trade in the guitar strings for the ink bottle at any moment...)
