Forget Guantanamo Bay, I got justice on eBay!

I bought some DVDs for $70 through PayPal from a guy who seemed to have a pretty good record as a buyer, but had just begun selling. After 3 weeks, the goods were not delivered and I wrote him. No answer. Three days later, another email to him. No answer.

I went back to the auction page and found that he suddenly had 20 negative comments in the last month. Furthermore, he had hidden the ability to view individual comments AND he was no longer a registered eBay member.

I read through eBay's complaint FAQs and they said I should do it through PayPal if that's how I bought it. So I started a dispute procedure through PayPal with a single email and yesterday, ten days later, they told me they had ruled in my favour and that my account would be credited with the money.

I'm kind of impressed. They said I have to wait four or five days for the money to appear in my account, so I'm not completely relaxed, but hey.

Now if only prisoners of war had such a simple dispute mechanism...

Yeah! Way to go! My brother got bilked out of $500 over a laptop on eBay with a similar situation, but they wouldn't reimburse him. Glad to see justice served!

Now, I may be wrong, but didn't you have a book due out soon? Or is it out already? I'm still interested in obtaining a copy. I've not forgotten over these last few months.

I would trust Paypal on transferring the money in - I have to do that when I want to buy something because I'm on debit and not credit, and it always comes through. Woould probably count on it being the fifth day, tho ;)

I had the same issue when paying a merchant (non-eBay) through Paypal. I got excited when Paypal ruled in my favor, only to find out a few days later that they couldn't debit from the merchant's bank account. Worst of all, they won't release any details of what action they take to protect the offender's privacy. I never did get the money back. (Not a huge loss, but it's the principle.)

I hope it works out better for you, but just wanted to let you know that it's not over until you have the money in your account.

Don't mention the evil book! After we finished the latest "final version," the editor said, "Great! I'm going to send it out to some educators for feedback." ROTFL 'cause the only other alternative is to cry...

Every time we get things press ready, she sends it out for feedback. Well, this week I am couriering off three copies to my sister who will put it in three classrooms for this Passover and we will be standing by with our own feedback. Because it's clear the editor will repackage whatever feedback she gets to fight for things she was asking for a year ago that we never gave her.

If she asks for any more changes beyond the highly minor I am going to write back to her: "The amount of time I have spent on this book now vastly outweighs any profit I could ever hope to recoup. Therefore, I have no incentive to (or, more to the point, intention of) make any further changes, especially as they will take this project farther away from the book the my sister and I feel should be released."

I got reimbursed for real and true. I just checked.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that the book was still 'in process'. I'll leave off poking that sore horse, except to say that you should tell your publisher just that! boo-yah!
