Thank you for encouraging words, friends. I really should go after the raise because I deserve it (he says, writing LJ entries at work). For me, the bigger issue is the hours but that's that's probably because part of me still thinks of this job as temporary. Any day now, my wonderful artistic pursuits will become my full-time work and I'll be all set. Of course, I've been here coming up on four years and the most likely scenario, if I start singing and recording more or start drawing comic books, is that I'm going to need a stable job like this, possibly for years. So, it's time to go for the cash and the time.

In related news: we went for a walk last night and Snake was practicing being a hard-ass. The college that didn't give him the full-time job will likely phone in the spring about doing another contract there in 2004-2005 . He wants to say something like: "No, I don't think so. And I'm surprised to hear from you, frankly. I wasn't good enough to to hire last year, but I'm good enough to be on contract? Anyway, after the disgraceful way I was treated during the interview process for a job that should have been mine anyway, I don't think I want to work with you."

All this practice stood him in good stead this morning. Today is his non-teaching day and he was just packing up the 25 essays he had to mark and heading for the beach when the phone rang. It was the new co-ordinator telling him to get his ass into the school and teach for someone who was away that day. He said, cool as ice, "That will be difficult, I'm afraid. I have an appointment today... (deep breath) and, besides, I'm teaching the most demanding class in the program, I have 25 students and an essay and summary from each to mark every week. I don't think I'll be able to come in, no." He said she was stunned but quickly acquiesed and hung up.

Wow! Me and TuTu spent 10 minutes congratulating him and reassuring him that it was the right thing to do. He finally agreed when he imagined himself abandoning his beach plans and heading into school, grinding his teeth in fury.

And if our congratulations weren't enough reassurance, the skies (which had glowered angrily overhead, threatening beach-sucking rain) suddenly cleared.
