We have booked all our hotels and ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) for our August trip. We were able to do everything by Internet except one place in Nikko. I made a fairly hilarious call to them, and after the clerk's initial panic, he did quite well.

He wasn't altogether sure what I meant by "August" but he confirmed the right date by saying what day of the week he thought it was. We gave each other a psychic high-five at the end, and I think we're booked. lol.
