I'm feeling awful, but better than yesterday.

We had our annual company retreat on Monday, Tuesday at a hotel in the Niagara region. The first day was quite amazing, finishing with an incredible evening spent talking at length with a former Prime Minister who has just joined the board of our company.

But I think the mussels did me in.

I woke at 2am, burning up. I tossed and turned for two hours, the nausea and cramps increasing, until I let loose at both ends around 4am. The rest of the night saw some sleep, but mostly stomach cramps. I went downstairs and told my colleagues I was going back to bed. More vomiting followed and then the rest of the day was a haze of fever, cramps and diarrhea. I was so weak, that I didn't have it in me to stand for more than five minutes at a time.

I slept like the dead last night (some pills to quell the cramps helped) and now I am feeling exhausted but not so systemically poor. I've even been able to eat and drink a bit.

Others who ate the mussels also felt unwell, but no one was hit like me. This might be because I am also fighting an amoeba infection in my guts which was diagnosed last week. Ugh. Snake has the parasites, too, and I wonder if we picked up the little visitors on some trip abroad and have been harbouring them for a year or two.

I am going to the doctor this morning and then coming home to SLEEP. Greatest joy.

Be well soon and yes it is quite possible you both picked up the parasite, though it doesn't have to be from abroad. Guess you need to find out from where.

I am THINKING of a trip back to Ontario in the summer but not sure just yet due a to a lot of uncertainty in my work life. But will you guys be around in July?

Just came from the doctor. He says the residual fatigue is mostly due to dehydration and that I should really drink a lot today. The problem is in my head: I say to myself that if that's all it is now, I should just "get over it" and work harder. But the fatigue is real and I have to respect that my body wants rest.

I don't know why we need to find out where the we got it. You're right. I could be any number of places.

We would be happy to see you in July and we have a bed for you for a couple of nights if you need it. We're not leaving town until last two weeks of August. Keep us informed.

Yes, do rest. And do drink, too. Dehydration takes a lot out of you.

Entamoeba infections can remain latent for years without causing issues, and then suddenly flare up. It is definitely a possibility in your case. I hope the doctor visit went well.

The visit was fine, though I was basically told that there was nothing to do but replenish my fluids. My doctor is of the school of "do nothing where possible." Sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I think he's just lazy. It was actually B. who diagnosed us and pushed the doctor to test him.

Think of your body, as you would a lover's. Make it any easier to respect its boundaries?
