Look out! TWO UPDATES COMING THIS WEEK! Part II of this chapter will be uploaded Friday.

Title: Days of Becoming, Chapter 34: “The Funk, Part I (X3)”
Author: Talktooloose
’Verse: X-Men movieverse
Warnings: explicit sexuality, drug use, family dinner, betrayal all around
Betas: [livejournal.com profile] mofic, keeper of the maps, and [livejournal.com profile] lux_apollo, defender of Mystique's honor.
Disclaimers: Marvel and 20th Century own the X-Men, I own my original characters. Ownership is illusion.

Series Summary: This novel focuses mainly on the paths Iceman and Pyro take on their way to adulthood and how they discover and deal with their love for each other. It is a novel about what Joni Mitchell calls ”the dream's malfunction” and how we can learn to make our own dreams when our heroes fail us. Other X characters (including ones from comicverse and elsewhere) and OC's play prominent roles and the action begins before X1, continues through the events of X2 and X3 and concludes in the aftermath of that movie. This novel does not take X-Men Origins: Wolverine as canon.

Previously, in Days of Becoming: Before the death of Jean Grey, the Phoenix appeared to Magneto, promising she would return. Now a member of Magneto's Brotherhood, Pyro has acquired intelligence about government anti-mutant initiatives including mutant-hunting robots called Sentinels. At the School for Gifted Youngsters, Bobby shocked and hurt Rogue by choosing to spend July with Sam Guthrie at his parents’ farm instead of with her at the mansion.

Hot. Bobby's excursion to a mutant gay bar is just the kind of stuff I like to see, i.e. a situation that I can completely identify with but in the context of something completely out of this world. (If that makes any sense.) I also really enjoyed your take on the relationship between Bobby and his family post-X2, because it's not something I've seen addressed before and I think you pulled it off pretty well. Bring on Friday!

(Also, I am now officially a second-year medic. This is very satisfying in itself [one sixth of the way to becoming a massively incompetent junior doctor with interpersonal skills severely retarded by an epoch of isolated studying] but more relevant because seriously, I don't think I'd even decided to be a doctor when I started reading this, which is just funny.)

Thank you. Yes, a deliberate theme of this novel is coming out, and I wanted to tell Bobby's coming out story in a way that felt true both to my own experience and that of many queer people I've known.

Your second paragraph depressed me briefly (omg, I'm still writing the same damn fanfic novel while people's lives are going BANG BANG BANG!), but then I realized that lives move at different speeds at different stages. You are in the BANG BANG BANG period of your life and I'm in the incremental change period.

That being said, I'm planning my possible future as a novelist now and maybe I'll be BANG BANG BANGing a bit myself in the next few years.

Well keep planning then, because I'm still reading and enjoying.

I like this. I like Bobby's hesitant but also determined approach to "new life". As you said, it kind of rings true to life.

I LOVED Redshift and Remy. Remy's Pot;Kettle speech. Nicely done.

All in all, I'm still loving this and eager for the next chapter.

Planning the new novel is such a relief. I've had the plot outline for years, but I actually stopped myself from letting it loose in my head, because I would have felt the need to start writing. I can only write one book at a time!

So now, characters are starting to develop colours and the world is deepening in details. I will actually wait until DOB is done to start writing an outline, but I'm looking forward to it so much.

I like what you say about Bobby's "hesitant but determined approach." He's a methodical guy, and when he's ready for something, he goes for it.

Next chapter? It's ready to go, but my hosting seems to have gone awol for a few hours. I sincerely hope it's up by this evening, or I'll be breaking my Friday promise.

Thanks for reading.
