Rheo Farewell Pt. 2
Mar. 29th, 2007 01:50 pmThe first Rheostatics song I posted (yesterday) was an idiosyncratic one, chosen because I like it and because it represents the four-headed beast that is the band in all their four-headed wonder.
Today, I bring you their poignant and powerful side with the more musically single-minded "Stolen Car". It is not only one of the best songs Dave Bidini has written, but is one of Martin Tielli's most stirring vocals (not to mention lead guitar work). This is the best of the three extant versions. It is from the "Double Live" album and seems to be close to when the song was first written as Dave introduces it saying, "We might screw this up a bit". Which they don't.
Like many Rheos songs, this one is an evocation of growing from childhood to adulthood. The band is from the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke. Once, when introducing their great epic "Dopefiends and Boozehounds," Dave said, "This is one about Etobicoke," and Martin responded, "Actually, they're all about Etobicoke."
Acid, Scars and Marijuana
The CBC has also put up a little photo show of their career here.
