What's Goin' On?
Mar. 20th, 2003 10:02 amWhen I was a kid (and even a young adult), I adored Disney World. I loved the idea of a perfectly staged and stage-managed world where all the details were taken care of. My taste for this brand of McDonaldization waned quickly in the subsequent years as I accepted the glories of messy human reality whose joys are reaped only with patience and dedication.
When I woke up this morning and discovered that the war had begun, I felt relieved for a minute. Part of me would love the U.S. to turn the whole planet into a Disney World where everything is safe and the birds sing only Elton John love songs.
But the cost is too great, and an afternoon in The World of Tomorrow is followed by a lifetime in the here and now -- so fuck it.
Bring peace and democracy to the planet? Sounds good. Unfortunately, our culture of unsustainable consumption and arrogant waste has neither the moral authority nor the vision to bring about these goals.
Father, Father
There's no need to escalate
War is not the answer
Only love can conquer hate
