Ill and Superman
Dec. 4th, 2006 07:20 pmAck. I basically didn't move all day except for walking the dog for fifteen minutes. I am determined to get on the subway and go to work tomorrow. Whether I'll last the whole day remains to be seen.
We watched Superman Returns last night and it was bascially as bad as Batman Begins. Perhaps a change of syntax would help the DC movies? What's Next? "Wonder Woman Flosses?"
I watched two hours of special features for the movie in my torpor today. I think the problem was that the execs told Singer and the writers that their story was powerful and spiritual and perfect. Well, it was far from that and way too much effort was spent on a half-baked story. Actually, the Clark/Lois/Cyclops/Kid arc was much more compelling than the Luthor stuff. Spacey was great, but the Luthor's plan was idiotic and, ultimately, visually flat. Furthermore, if the kryptonite-laced crystal was so harmful to Supes that brief exposure left him vulnerable to ass-whuppin' at Luthor's hands, how did he find the strength to lift this new continent? Furthermore, how could he have acheived escape velocity with so much mass? Furthermore, didn't it look like he was diving into magma beneath the sea? I thought he would just open up a volcanoe and sink the continent like Atlantis.
- Brandon Routh was good and it was cool watching his training with the movement coach and the amazing wire work in preparation
- The action sequence with the plane and the shuttle was breathtaking and was never topped... which is problematic considering the movie had 90 more minutes to go.
- Jimmy was swell and underused
- Kal Penn is hot and was underused
- Parker Posey is good news

Date: 2006-12-05 06:06 pm (UTC)Superman Returns main message seemed to be, "No money-making franchise is ever dead if you believe in fairies and enough time has gone by."
I mean, seriously. You should have heard them going on about the "spiritual" tale in the bonus features. There was dick-all spiritual about it. Number one plot, "Will Supes and Lois admit their love for each other." Number two plot, a tired and unconvincing James Bond retread.
Compare this to "should innate qualities be considered a disease." "If a cure exited, would it be mandatory? weaponized?" "What are the morals of controlling someone's life because you are afraid of their strength?"
X3 was actually about stuff and had some depth as a result, even if they fucked it up a bit, especially from the POV of the fandom.
You disagree?
