Music for the King of the World
Nov. 2nd, 2004 05:00 pmMany important emotional moments lately: insights, dreams, sorrows and triumphs.
Also, political insights, dreams for the future.
Self-examination, bravery to plumb the depths. Self knowledge.
But for now, here's some great albums I've bought lately:
Rheostatics: 2067
Elvis Costello and the Imposters: The Delivery Man
Cowboy Bebop: fancy bootleg of 4 CD Japanese soundtrack set
Björk: Medulla
Also, Bowie's amazing Reality Tour live DVD which has led me back to Bowie's wonderful recent albums, Reality and Heathen.
Rheostatics: Marginalized (lyrics by Tim)
All rise.
The new king of the world just crowned himself tonight
by the blinding light of cathode lies.
Surprise, we've been muted, we've been marginalized.
Unleashed, delusions of one human head,
one tiny beast become the very air we breathe.
Surprise, by the blinding light of cathode lies.
Has this head been denied what inspires love of kind
and in turn try to turn the world away from love inspired?
All rise.
It's blind to substitute with laser guides the eyes,
and drown in the deafening din of angry cries.
And in turn try to turn the world away from love inspired.
All rise.
All rise.
The new king of the world just crowned himself tonight
by the blinding light of cathode lies.
Surprise, we've been muted, we've been swept aside.
Also, political insights, dreams for the future.
Self-examination, bravery to plumb the depths. Self knowledge.

Date: 2004-11-02 02:49 pm (UTC)That song totally fails for me. After the line, "I'm Afraid of Americans," the next line is "I'm Afraid of the World". Well, what are we to make of that? If you're afraid of the world, of course you're afraid of Americans!! It's meaningless!
Although it really really rocks on the live DVD. And the "God is an American" line is very spooky and the closest the song comes to some kind of political frisson.
Bowie is better when he's not totally coherent:
I mean, you can almost grasp the meaning, but it's ellusive.
