How My Brain Works
Sep. 14th, 2005 09:53 am1. I hear a dog bark as I approach the subway. I look around (because a dog is always worth seeing) and see, partly obscured by a bush, a woman walking down the road, her unseen hand being tugged as by a leash. A moment later, a two-year old child is becomes visible pulling at that arm. For a moment, I conclude that the child did the barking.
2. On the subway platform, a somewhat flustered-sounding announcer says, "Please stay behind the yellow line as the subway is, uh, on approach." My editor ears recoil at this phrasing but I make myself feel better by deciding that he said instead, "...the subway is beyond reproach."
