I'm melting, melting...

The agony of this weather is so intense that the moments of relief are utterly orgasmic... a breeze that licks you with a tongue far cooler than the dog's.

Me, Snake and Toutou had an amazing three hour discussion this morning about life and growth and self-development. It was a way better thing to do than clean the house which was the original agenda for the morning. Without these discussions, Snake points out, it is impossible to get perspective on our lives and we have not had enough of them lately.

I'm reading When We Were Real by William Barton which is written with reserve, joy and sorrow. I like finding a new SF author.

We have booked our vacation and we're heading back to Algonquin Park because it was the only place we could reserve on the long weekend. Frankly, a return to Canisbay suits me just fine.

Snake read and loved A Very Long Engagement so Friday night we rented the movie which just came out on DVD. Oh my gord, it could not have been worse. Snake has been railing for two days until I now understand precisely what is wrong about the adaptation.

But I don't need the comparison with the book to know that Jeunet can't really tell a story. Witness Amelie, witness Alien Resurrection. Even witness City of Lost Children, a movie I love for its inventiveness but which doesn't hang together. He should have quit after the excellent Delicatessen. And he should leave poor Audrey Tatou alone -- he makes her act badly. What the fuck? A tuba and a secret smile? Cut a me a break.

A far better told story was The Quiet American which we saw last night. At the heart of this movie (in place of Long Engagement's 50,000 incomprehensible storylines that robbed the main story of all its powers) there is a simple tale of a love triangle from which all the intrigue, revelation and political comment grows. The movie was sure of its intent and sure of its characters. A lovely Michael Caine performance and Brendan Fraser is developing into a fine character actor now that he's lost his youthful beauty. He looks like someone out of the 1950s.

Food for thought: Michael Caine is told in the movie, "To stay human, sooner or later you have to choose sides."

God, it's humid here too. And I've been cleaning and moving furniture all day, sans air conditioning.

I agree about Amélie -- the movie had so much charm and appeal, but the plot just lagged. I own the DVD, but every time I think about watching it again I get tired.

(Also agree about Brendan Fraser. Gods and Monsters was a fine performance, and not just because he was acting opposite Ian McKellen.)

I liked everything about that movie except the plot. It was such a cool atmosphere, and that setting has some pretty cool potential. It would have been nice if it had been a little easier to understand.
