I became obsessed with finishing Days of Becoming by doing a final fast edit and printing it as a book, just for me or perhaps me and the betas. I would make it available as the definitive version online in pdf form. This began a very long process.

Technical hair pulling )

Despite my troubles, I now have a printed copy of DOB, v1 sitting on my bookshelf which is insanely cool. Frankly, I'm going to print another copy (with saddle-stitch imposition), and get a print shop to cut the stack in two and cerlox bind it. That will be the reading copy (or copies).

Here's the book in the rig, ready for glueing:

On to editing volume 2…

Title: Days of Becoming, Epilogue, Chapter 44: “Oh! You Pretty Things!"
Author: Talktooloose
’Verse: X-Men movieverse
Betas: [livejournal.com profile] mofic and [livejournal.com profile] lux_apollo. One last time, thanks!
Disclaimers: Marvel and 20th Century own the X-Men, but often get it wrong. I own my original characters, for all the profit that brings. I also get it wrong, but I don't charge people for it.

Series Summary: This novel focuses mainly on the paths Iceman and Pyro take on their way to adulthood and how they discover and deal with their love for each other. It is a novel about what Joni Mitchell calls ”the dream's malfunction” and how we can learn to make our own dreams when our heroes fail us. Other X characters (including ones from comicverse and elsewhere) and OC's play prominent roles and the action begins before X1, continues through the events of X2 and X3 and concludes in the aftermath of that movie. This novel does not take X-Men Origins: Wolverine as canon.

It's done at last. Pinch me. Please enjoy the final installment and, if you've been waiting for it leave WIP status, you can now begin this THING which took me four years to write. I wouldn't have made it without my betas, the wonderful encouragement of the readers, and the enthusiasm of the fandom.

If you're interested in receiving email about my upcoming (non fanfic) novel, please fill out the form at the end of the chapter.

I will be posting Endnotes to the book as well as a laid out pdf of the whole (with minor edits) in about two weeks. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for reading. It's been a life-changing experience.

Previously in Days of Becoming: The last few days have witnessed incredible tumult and tragedy. Charles Xavier has been killed by Jean Grey in her Phoenix manifestation before she herself died on Alcatraz at the hands of Wolverine. Rogue has disappeared from the school, sneaking out in the early hours of the morning to get "cured." Thousands of American mutants have taken the cure including — unwittingly — Magneto himself during the battle on Alcatraz. In the final moments of that battle, when the Phoenix force was destroying all in its path, Bobby broke away from his X-Men comrades to save John, carrying his unconscious body off the battle field and across San Francisco Bay.

Uh-oh, I just got my beta of Chapter 37 back from [livejournal.com profile] lux_apollo and I'm starting to see that I have more work to do. Shit, just when I was getting into 38. But I see the places where I'm solid and those where I'm floundering.

The truth is, I always know as I'm writing when I'm off, but sometimes I get so tired or lost that I pretend it's okay. Thank you to my bullshit-detecting editors. Sorry if this delays the chapter a bit more. It'll be worth the wait.

As I stagger towards the finish line on Days of Becoming, it is clear to me that I wish to continue writing novels. I should point out that the next novel is not fanfic. It is a horror/urban-fantasy novel, and it's working title is "Way, Way Up in the Dirty, Dirty Depths".

The idea has been floating around in my head for at least a decade, but I consciously stopped myself planning it a couple of years ago, or even letting its images ripen. Stories left on the shelf too long go rancid, but if they are still in a germinal stage, they keep longer. In about July I watered the seeds, added some fertilizer and let it start to grow (BLOCK THAT METAPHOR!). I think I will be ready to begin writing in January.

The tentative plan is to release it as a regular podcast. I've enjoyed the episodic writing I've been doing with my fanfic and I would rather keep to that than just bury myself in a book for a year and then try to release it somehow. However, many questions arise: can I keep to a weekly podcast schedule? How many words would that have to be? Is it a bad idea to have an irregular podcast that only shows up when a chapter is done? Am I going to find the need to make individual 'casts somewhat self-enclosed constricting in terms of the whole novel?

Dickens did it. I should be able to.

I am dealing with a lot of fear that no one will listen to it. Writing fanfic gives you a built-in audience. Over 1000 people are following DOB and that is a huge wind in my sails. Will I be able to keep going if I people aren't listening?

I think it will be a good book... I'm excited to begin writing it...

Title: Days of Becoming, Chapter 36: “The Last Flowers of Fall (X3)”
Author: Talktooloose
’Verse: X-Men movieverse
Betas: [livejournal.com profile] mofic and [livejournal.com profile] lux_apollo. Thank you for canon warnings and a million details.
Disclaimers: Marvel and 20th Century own the X-Men, I own my original characters. Ownership is illusion.

Series Summary: This novel focuses mainly on the paths Iceman and Pyro take on their way to adulthood and how they discover and deal with their love for each other. Previously, in Days of Becoming: Mike Haddad has long left the school, but his efforts on behalf of mutants go on. John Allerdyce has little time to think about his novel, which is being read online all over the world. With Mystique in custody, he is Magneto's right-hand man, and the great man has great plans. Jubilee, out of action as a New X-men due to a broken leg, has been following the arrest of an Asian gang leader in Los Angeles, one she seems to remember from her childhood in the house of her dead parents. Scott Summers has jumped on his bike and gone to find out why his dead lover, Jean Grey, is still calling him.

He is to get into the bed of a Taylor Kincaid, a closeted Washington consultant working for Congressman Kemper of Idaho, and extract information on government anti-mutant initiatives. Back at the School for Gifted Youngsters, Bobby finds himself full of doubts. Although he and Rogue are supposedly the number one couple of the school, he finds himself thinking constantly about John and their time together. Doug Ramsey and Jones have formed a somewhat shady underground business called Janus Dog Node, helping various organizations and individuals hide money and information on a private, secure Internet simulacrum.

As mentioned more than a month ago, I'm going to be posting some non-fanfic writing. I'm finally putting up a story today for a filtered group. If you would like to be included, please comment here.

If you only know me as Talktooloose, I might not include you. I still have to decide how to handle that. Probably I'll just include you and stop being so precious. If you are not on my friends list, I can't include you in this custom friending, I'm afraid.

I've written a short story and I'd like interested people to read it. It's a retelling of an Aesop fable.

It is the first of four shorts I hope to have completed by next summer (and still stay on track with my fanfic novel). Two are SF and one is a drama that starts in a shtetl in Poland in the 1890s and ends in Toronto in the 1980s.

I will create a filter for those who wish to read these. Just comment if you want to be added.

I am writing these under my real name (sort of). If you do not know my true identity (!) and wish to be on this filter, ask and I will make a decision.

A satirical novel popped into my head at the end of last week and then presented a lot of its details to me early Sunday morning. I wrote up what I knew and I'm kind of excited about it.

Maybe I'll write that next instead of my horror fantasy book. I'm determined to make it only 60,000 words. Honest.

Writing

talktooloose: (beta)
I finished my fable and have shared it with a couple of people. The scary thing was giving it to Snake to read. He is waiting until I finish DOB to read it (curse you, WIP-phobes!) so it's the first writing of mine he's seen since I got serious about my craft almost two years ago.

I've learned over the years to separate my art self from my relationship self but I still really wanted him to like it. I asked him to not read it in bed with me before going to sleep because I didn't want to be around watching his reaction. He hates any behaviour from me that he perceives as "art precious" so he ignored this request. I found this strangely grounding.

His comments were right on the money and all the parts I was unsure about, he immediately flagged. I am very happy. He refused to take my insecure bait and declare me a "good writer". *grump* But an honest and wise editor is always a better option. Especially one who doesn't give me shit if I promise to help with dinner but instead keep writing for another 45 minutes.

For those awaiting DOB 16, I finished it and then realized that the first section was its own chapter. I beefed it up into a small stand-alone which should be published in a few days. Chapter 17, therefore, is also written but I haven't received all the betas on it. Expect it not too long after 16. This afternoon I will either begin writing 18 or at least do some more thinking about it.
